Staying Safe While Running/Walking at Night

With the sun setting so early, it can be difficult to get outside during daylight hours. A quick jog or walk after work is a great way to get some fresh air, relieve stress, and move your body, but there are a few risks to be aware of and prepared for. With a little forethought, we can all continue to enjoy a nighttime stroll or jog safely.

Staying Safe While Running/Walking at NightWear Reflective Gear

Reflective clothing makes it significantly easier for drivers to spot you in the dark. Reflective stripes should run along the front, back, and sides of your clothing.

Light Your Way

Even if you’re walking in a well-lit location, you may come across dark areas. A small flashlight that fits in your pocket can be very useful.

Choose Your Route Wisely

Choosing a familiar path can help you feel more at ease strolling at night when it’s harder to see the road or trail you’re on. Choose paths that are well-lit, allow you to walk away from traffic, and are free of foliage and dark spots. Outdoor shopping centers are a wonderful choice for nighttime walking/running because they usually have plenty of illumination and other people around.

Before leaving the house, be sure to let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. You can also allow someone to access your phone’s location for the duration of your workout.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

Go out with a companion, whether that’s a person or dog, for additional safety. Be aware of your surroundings and project a confident and determined demeanor.

Avoid wearing headphones or staring at your phone constantly. Not only is this distracting for you, but it may make you seem like an easier target for crime.

Staying Safe While Running/Walking at NightKnow the Basics

The following are essential guidelines to think about every time you’re walking or running outdoors.

  • Use sidewalks and off-road paths instead of the street.
  • Move in the direction facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles.
  • Use extra caution when crossing streets, as drivers often aren’t expecting pedestrians at night.
  • Be aware of tripping hazards such as uneven sidewalks, rocks, potholes, trash, etc.
  • Avoid deserted routes. Try using the same routes as other walkers and runners.
  • Avoid clothing that blends in with the environment around you (e.g., black clothing at night, dark green clothing in the woods, etc.).

By following these tips, you can keep yourself safer during your workout and continue enjoying nighttime walks or runs.
