Alcohol and the Holidays

The holiday season is often synonymous with large meals, large get-togethers, and the large consumption of alcohol. To keep everyone safe (and keep off a few holiday pounds), read ahead for some tips on safe alcohol consumption this season.

If you’re planning a holiday party with the people you live with, try providing fun, non-alcoholic drinks such as sparkling juices, flavored sparkling waters, ciders, or try your hand at making holiday-themed mocktails.

Pace yourself by alternating alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic drinks. If you can drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink, you’ll be able to stay better hydrated and potentially stave off a hangover.

If you’re heading to a socially-distant celebration, plan how you’ll get home ahead of time. Alternate designated drivers with those you live with, arrange who you’ll be walking home with, or order a ride from an Uber, Lyft, or Taxi.

If you’re going out, always bring a jacket. Alcohol causes blood to rise to the skin and away from your core, creating a false sense of warmth. By wearing a jacket and not spending too much time in the cold, you can drastically reduce the chance of becoming hypothermic.

Remember to count your drinks and look at your drinking habits. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men is considered to be moderate alcohol consumption.
